I'm now working on tabulating results. I'll be sure to post about findings... I'm certainly clueless right now as to what I'm going to find. The results haven't been anything like what I was expecting... *sweatdrop*

Sanku for those who've filled it out... Also, if people wanted to PM answers because they feel uncomfortable posting, that's perfectly good too. And, of course, if you just don't want to at all, that's fine as well. Surveys aren't for everyone.

If you guys were ambitious or whatnot, you could even print it out and have your family members fill it out and then PM or email the results to Cynth.

13. If you can think of any, what are benefits and drawbacks you see to online community and "computer mediated" communication? Pros are that it's an easy way to meet people, and also allows you to meet people from other places, that you might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. They're a great way to help shy people make friends, and to get to know people from different culters and ways of life.
Cons are that they can't fulfill all our needs for human interaction, and so can't be the only type of communication we participate in. Also, it's harder to get to know someone online than in person, and there's always the possibility you're being decieved about who someone is.

Pros: The internet and most online communication can be very helpful in obtaining information. It allows you to contact many people very quickly if you need information. A survey, for example. XD
Also, it allows you to interact with people who share your interests from across the world. It's a great way to meet casual friends and share your ideas. It's also helpful in aiding creative and personal expression. I'm a lot more vocal and eloquent online than I am in real life. (embarrassed) It's pretty much an easy access to a community of people that you can do about anything with short of physical relationships.
Cons: Communities can be unsafe and sometimes inappropriate. They allow an anonymous contact that requires a certain presence of mind. People can be decieved much easier in online communities.
Online friends often times are not the best of friends in the fact that communication is limited. The social skills you develope online aren't the same as the ones you need in face-to-face contact such as expression, vocalism, and posture.
It's also harder for an online friend to prove their loyality. They won't be standing up against a bully for you any time soon; they can comfort you after but you have no way of knowing if they really care. Thus, you may be forming a complex and hard to manage network of meaningless relationships. That is, spending your energy creating and maintaining a community that's only purpose is to feed you superficial support. Escapism can become a problem. It is important to realize friends, family, and an identity outside of this one.
Especially since in RP communities you often portray someone you are not. Someone you want to be but someone not true to you.

- improve typing/web building skills ~And Cussing skills an added bonus!~
- in some cases can be used on your resume to beef up some spots that may be lacking ~"Erm, yes Mr. Kussfart, I am capable of working with JAVA/PERL/SCHNIZZBLAT script... In fact I've been working with them extensively in my free time." Do Not mention time was spent trying to get around no-right-clicking/trying to figure out Why the bloody popup keeps crashing your comp when you were Sure you removed Geo's little ad embed from your free site!~
- learn new technologies... ~such as the fact that a comp bought on Monday will be obselete by Wednesday.... If you're lucky it's not sooner.~
Drawbacks- - Poor posture *stretches achy back*
- shortened attention span ~now Why was I here again?~
- forgetting things like the fact that what happens online is no more "REality" than what happens on 'Days of Our Lives' ~Hey does anybody know what happened with Sammy & Lucas? I so haven't seen it in ages!*whines*~
Hope that helped.

Thank you so, so very much to everyone who has taken time out of their schedules just to fill out a survey for someone who hasn't even been participating in the community lately.
To me, this really shows that internet communities can be like real communities, and I plan on including a note of this in my final paper.
No one will ever know just how grateful I am to everyone... because without these answers and the support you've given me by filling them out and sharing with me... I wouldn't be able to graduate.
This is for my "capstone", the last thing I need to complete my sociology degree. Again, thank you SO much, everyone.
Silvanon, out of concern for everyone, please delete this thread if you can... I think that would be best. *nodnods*
Also, I promise that I will fill everyone in on any findings... so far, I have no idea what may come of this as the answers aren't correlating with my hypotheses at all! (LOL)
