As those of you who read my LJ know, I've been aware of this for a while (there's even a really good public rant) and I am simply furious. Furious at the Bush administration which has once again proven how horrible it is for the environment and wildlife protection, and at the cattle ranchers who are whinging about their precious hamburgers-on-the-hoof not getting enough to eat on public land.
I've been on a hamburger strike for a week now. No sir, no beef for me.

but that doesnt make money does it?

If their presious cattle aren't getting enough to eat then quite simply they have too many cattle and should cut down the herds to a feedable size. Like DUh. >.< Thats what everyone else does! or should be doing...they do it to wild populations thats why they have hunting season for the huge population of deer, to keep them from overgrazing.
GEesh it's not like people in America are starving for the lack of meat on the market quite simply there is too much being produced anyways.

Yeah it always has been about the money. Most of the world is all about money. By the time they realize that everything they destroy will mean less money made and more money spent in the future it'll be too freaking late.

There's actually a ratio of about 150 to 1 in terms of cattle to horses. Furthermore, these are private assets (a.k.a the cattle) for privately owned businesses that are being left to forage for food on public lands. Basically, the cattle ranchers are feeding their stock at the expense of you and me (in terms of taxes on public land maintainence) and we're not seeing a dime of that in return when those privately owned assets are sold. Instead, the cattle barons expect us to turn around and fork over six bucks for a quarter-pounder.
It's pretty sad, these people are making millions. Why not use it to feed the freaking cows? Y'know, buy some hay and stuff. Gah. They've been poisoning the praire dogs because prarie dogs dig holes and eat the grass, and now they're going to slaughter the mustangs because they eat the grass too. Next thing you know, the cattle barons are going to be shooting each others' cows (as a friend of mine put it)

No kidding. We raise cattle here. We also grow corn. We feed the corn to the cows. When we harvest the corn, the cows go into the fields to eat whats left and fertilize the land. In the summer they get a patch of green land to roam.
The thing about cows? They are LAZY. They are lazy, and they are slow, and they are not hard to please. Cow's dont need miles upon miles. They need grass, water, some shade. Cows arent picky. I dont like keeping cows in mud-pits, but when it comes to areas for them to graze, they dont need a lot of room.
Men are greedy. And they dont care who gets in their way.
Huge example of greedy: Gas.

Grrr. >.< I know how you feel. Us Australians have a certain greedy prime minister who has decided to start screwing up the environment.
But anyway, that's horrible. :( I'm *just* managing to hold off brutal comments.

/growl... Along the lines of helping close the slaughter houses in general: Not sure how many of you read my livejournal/saw www.livejournal.com/~vayshedruvon/92416.html that post of mine. Either way, there are two rescue barn type places selling bracelets ($15, that includes shipping) and the money goes to trying to close down the slaughterhouses that kill horses in the US/caring for rescues. The bracelet has the description of a perfectly healthy horse who was slaughtered, and the date it occured. "Sorrel TB Gelding, Stripe, 16 Hands- Slaughtered on 7/15/04 That one's mine. What sort of horse you get is completely random. You can get them through www.habitatforhorses.org or www.lser.org and I highly recommending checking out those sites. They may not be focusing on mustangs and burros, so I guess this is a wee bit off topic... but not completely. Ultimately, the slaughter needs to be stopped at the physical source. If the option isn't there, then they can't be sold into it. Granted, it's a long shot, but we do what we can, right? Right. off I go...
