Hey guys, I know a few people out there use GeoCities or have old pages on GeoCities they might rather not lose. Yahoo has finally pulled the plug on GeoCities (no new accounts can be made anymore) and later this year it will be shut down entirely. So this is just a heads up to everyone - there's no need to rush to backup your pages according to Yahoo, although it's better to move/back them up sooner than later

Thanks for the headsup!
I was just starting to work on backing things up there, I guess I'll put a little more effort into that then I had been! (haven't made any progress the last week... *cough* )

Thanks for that... I was going to do a major overhaul of my adopted site at some point. Better go save the site now, so I don't forget about it later.

angelfire/lycos probably won't be far behind. Seems like free webhosting is becoming a thing of the past.

Wow, didn't see that coming, though I guess I should have. But then I haven't been using those sites I have, I just have some random stuff still located on them. But still, geocities has been around since...forever ^.^

Thanks for posting this Livi! It'll be sad to see all the really old pages disappear...though it'll finally force me to organize my pages like I've meant to for awhile, so I guess it's not all bad in my case. *crooked grin*

If people are finding it hard to find a new free host, try checking out this link: www.absolutely-free-hosting.com/It lists a bunch of free hosts and lists out what they offer, etc. It might help when you are ready to relocate. ^^ I've started relocating a bunch of my adoptables now because I needed to update a few things on that site for a while now as it was bugging me. I guess I never really noticed how many I've managed to collect over the years. xD

It's a nice offer, but what's even cooler is the web hosting history that's up here. Even if you're not looking for a new host, check this out!

Oh man, I feel old. I remember when all those thing like WebRings were big. And guestbooks (I still have my Dreambook), and when people would give out awards to each other's sites ^.^
And those days when people would make pages with clashing colours and thousands of animated gifs. Don't forget the snowglobe and reflection lake applets that came after that. xD Things have changed and I have to admit the internet is much easier on the eyes than it used to be.
I wonder if Lady Hippo's adoptions are still out there.....

don't forget site fights. I think that is still around, at least when I last checked. Voting for your friends in that was big for a while.

I never joined any site fights, but I do on occasion get one signing my guestbook (dreambook actually) asking me to join So yup, they're still around. What about those growing flower things you could send people, remember those? ^.^ *nods* The internet has definitely changes, all youtube and mypage now. Never got into that facebook/mypage thing...I mean really, I don't want people knowing about all the details of my boring life LOL youtube is fun though...so is icanhascheezburger.com (goes to look at silly captioned kitty pictures...) Remember the hamster dance? ROFL

*loves on the whole icanhas site family*
Even adoptables are not the busy, wait-listed industries they once were.
