This crazy thing in the middle of the desert, everyone brings a whoooole bunch of plywood and starts building huge monuments to stuff. Other people randomly deface it, and then, on the last night of it, you light it all on FIIIREEE!!!! I think it's in california or summat.

seu ita rata seu quia deus auctor culpae honestior erat, Martem incertae stirpis patrem nuncupat.
Something about, "Mars she named their father either because she really believed it or because she thought the fault would be not as bad if they believed a deity was at fault."
Bobfest!! Yeah, I've heard of that!!

That sounds a lot like Homecoming at high school. Man, that ritual weirded me out. Supposedly civilized people throwing eggs at a giant cutout of the other team and then burning it down.

Did you ever see Monty Python's Life of Brian? There's this great scene where a Hebrew man is scribbling anti-Roman graffiti on a wall and a centurion comes over and starts correcting his grammar, eventually making him write the same sentence over and over on the wall.

latin graffiti makes me happy <3
as for our homecoming, we lit the plywood facing of our cider stand every year, because it was tradition for the seniors to paint it.
of course, the one year, the shack accidentally broke, so we had to stand around while the people tried to light like seven years of acrylic paints on fire . their idea was to fire a burning arrow into it, and it'd go up no problem. hah. They used about a gallon of gas, two flares, and three more arrows before it finally caught. *snerk* Idiots.

LOL I don't know that I'd want to breathe in burning acrylics.
I heart python, too. my fiancee went to see Spam-a-lot on Broadway without me.
