I have a gift certificate that I need to use up, and since my bookstore carries manga now, I was thinking of trying that out. But I'm a newbie at this, so anyone have any recommendations? I've been told Fruit Baskets is good. Oh, and I generally like a fantasy twist to it, make sure it has its magic and strange creatures. It can be cute (but not too childish) or it can be dark, and great artwork is a major plus. Oh yeah, and obviously it has to be in English BTW, if anyone else if a Vampire Hunter D fan, the first novel in the series has been translated, the second is supposed to come out in September and the third early next year ^_^

Everyone has such different tastes. The best way to do it, really, is to get ahold of some of the sampler books the different Manga companies put out, and see which of the samples catch your interest.
Hum...Well, I'll recommend DNAngel. Fantasy...Alice 19th had a fantasy twist, I liked that one. Fruits Basket is definately good, I'll add my recommendation on that one. Hum, maybe you'll like Vampire Game or King of Hell.

If you're looking for darker, more adult-oriented manga, I highly reccomend Sword of the Dark Ones as well as Ray. Both have amazing art, storyline and are filled with pretty boys, but both contain swearing and some nudity. Nothing too bad, though.
I'd also reccomend Bleach. Just because. If you want a lovey-romance thing, go for Tramps Like Us. And the Naruto manga pwns the show. XD

DNAngel * Megatokyo * Ragnarok * Shutterbox * HanaKimi (( non fatnasy )) Wish X Deathnote (( only have in Japanese and thus a vague understanding of wot's happening )) Tactics (( again, only have in Japanese and may be unpleasantly surprised by shonen-ai. . . <<;; )) Mars (( non-fantasy )) Demon Diary * Petshop of Horrors * Kill Me Kiss Me (( non-fantasy )) * Red River Rurouni Kenshin Samurai Deeper Kyo Full Metal Panic * Tokyo Mewmew Full Metal Alchemist (( the anime is fantastic, and i can only assume the manga is as well )) Fruits Basket * Jing King of Bandits *
i'm sure there's lots more that i know of, but i'll just cut it off there. ^^;; starred my favourites, in case you care. ^~ hehe but, as silv said, you really need to scan them and see which ones you like. if you have time, see if you can sit down and read through a few of them. ^^

*pounces seraaches* I saw the first few chapters of Deathnote, I'm diffinately going to get it some day. ;D And the Fullmetal Alchemist manga r0x0rz, though the plot is quite differant from the anime. I should make a list of all my manga and my opinions on each title. ^^ It sounds like we have similar tastes, lol. Fruits Basket is a GREAT chose for a newbie, it was my first manga. Romantic/Comedy with darker themes later on and a good dose of supernatural goodness. And sounds like you might like xxxHOLiC too, it's by Clamp - basically a story about a boy who can see ghosts and such who has a job working for a witch. It is also crossoever mania- characters from Clamp's other works make guest appearances from time to time. Humm... what else is good? Mermaid Saga and Inuyasha (both by Rumiko Takahashi), Hellsing, Orphen, The Tarot Cafe (but technically 'manga', it's from korea, but still good. It is sort of like xxxHOLiC), Megatokyo, Fullmetal Alchemist and Descendants of Darkness. I haven't read it yet, only thumbed through it, but Chobits seems good too - made by Clamp and more cute and sci-fi-ish then my other recs, the anime is great. ^^ And if nothing here sounds good you can always go check out tokyopop's website( tokyopop.com ), they have a great website with a quite a bit of info on all of the manga they publish. *shrugs* That's all that I can think of, hope it helps. ^__^

Just go to the store and read the backs of the books and look at the pictures and see what you might like. But, if you really want a suggestion...
For fantasy and magic, Dawby suggests...
Inuyasha (Girl travels back to feudal Japan, meets half demon. Search for magic shards of crystal. Horror, fantasy, action-adventure, drama, comedy, romance.)
Red River (Girl travels back to ancient Hittite Empire. Meets handsome prince and evil queen. Fantasy, action-adventure, drama, romance.)
Fushigi Yugi (Girl travels back to - surprise! - feudal China. Fulfills prophesy. Fantasy, action-adventure, drama, romance.)
Immortal Rain (Girl meets man who cannot die who seeks revenge on man from past. Sci-fi/fantasy, action-adventure, comedy, drama.)
Trigun (Two girls meet ageless man who seeks revenge on man from his past. Sci-fi, action-adventure, comedy, drama.)
Vampire Game (Vampire king is reincarnated as pet of princess from the line of his old enemy against whom he seeks *gasp* revenge. Fantasy, action-adventure, drama, comedy, romance.)
Sorcerer Hunters (Crazy "sorcerer hunters" go after sorcerers that persecute commoners. Fantasy, action-adventure, drama, comedy, romance.)
Van Von Hunter (Super dippy but hysterical. Warrior fights evil things with memory-impaired hot sidekick girl. Fantasy, action-adventure, comedy. Try out the original online comic.)
Rayearth (Girls travel to magic land to become legendary magic knights. Fantasy, drama, action-adventure, comedy, romance.)
Sailor Moon (Magic girl warriors take on the forces of evil in short skirts. Fantasy, drama, romance, comedy, action-adventure.)
Out of the fantasy category, I also highly recommend...
Ranma 1/2 (Boy changes into girl whenever splashed with cold water. Martial arts/action-adventure, comedy, romance.)
Boys Over Flowers (Girl tangles with the most ruthless, rich, and powerful boys in school. Romantic complications ensue. Drama, comedy, romance.)
Hot Gimmick (Girl is blackmailed into becoming slave of rich boy upstairs. Drama, comedy, romance.)
Mars (Bad boy and sensitive girl fall in love. Drama, romance.)
Marmalade Boy (Parents of a boy and a girl swap partners. Boy and girl fall in love. Romance, drama, comedy.)
Azu Manga Daioh (Random misadventures of school girls. Comedy.)
Love Hina (Boy studies for college entrance exams and works as caretaker for house full of young women. Comedy, romance.)

Wow, thanks for all the ideas everyone! ^_^
Silv - I know my bookstore has DNAngel, the cover art drew my attention. What is it about? And where does one get those samples you mentioned?
Looks like I'll definitely try Fruit Baskets, seems like quite a few votes on that one and I do like the story idea. Actually a lot of them sound very interesting...
*copies down the list and runs off to do a little research*

DNAngel follows the story of Niwa, who learns on his 14th birthday that every male in his family can turn into the notorious winged art theif, Phantom Dark. And the change to their other half is caused by feelings of unrequited love! Of course, Niwa has fallen desperately in love with one of his classmates, who doesn't feel the same about him, but how is he to get the girl to love him (and get rid of Dark) if every time he starts feeling romatic towards her, he changes into Dark?
It's a cute series, with lovely artwork and a definate fantasy flare. Eventually we learn that Dark isn't quite the scoundrel he first appears to be, and that there's actually an altruistic reason for why he goes around stealing art.

I'd go for Fruits Basket too. If you like darker with a bit of gore I'd go with Petshop of Horrers. Interesting manga with a really elegant art style. Megatokyo is funny though not particularily pretty and you can get it free online at www.megatokyo.comAnd DeathNote is interesting. You can find translations online.

Oh, I forgot to answer your other question ~ Usually you can find the samplers in the same store where you get the manga. Watch for setup displays for a certain company-often they'll include a sampler you can get free, or sometimes free with a purchase of another manga by that company. You can ask the store reps to find out what samplers they currently have available. TokyoPop has also recently been advertising that you can signup online to have samplers mailed to you. I haven't tried it yet so I can't vouch for it, but here's the URL: www.tokyopop.com/takuhaionline/
