Photoshop is what I use, Paintshop can also work. Most programs let you try a sample version online (install it and it works for 30 days or whatever).

She's right, they're both expensive - I'd advice looking for a slightly older version on ebay. ^.^

Paint Shop Pro (PSP) is about $100 new, Adobe Photoshop is about $600 new.

I've never used PSP, but I absolutely ADORE my Adobe Photoshop Elements II and Adobe Photoshop 5.0
Also, does anyone know how to access layers on ps elements? I can mess with them in my ps 5, but not my elements.... 0.o

I think PS elements is a really trimmed down PS so I don't think it has everything regular PS has (so maybe it doesn't have layers?)

It has layers, to be sure. It just doesn't have all the effects included in full PS - various filters and tools and such.

I have Photo Shop 4.0LE Photo Shop 7.0 Photo Shop Elements 2.0 I would highly suggest getting an older version of Photo Shop for cheap then just buy the upgrades. OR if you have a student ID you can get it for a little bit cheaper

Oh, wait my bad. I know how to do the layers, what I meant to ask about was the channels. The style I've found to do my lineart for my artwork requires I work with channels...and I can't find channels on my Elements 2!!!! *dies* So I have to do all my lineart in 5 before I can color it in elements. It's annoying...

Adobe Suites is very expensive, but I find photoshop it be one of the better paint programs.
I had a PSP5 for my first one, bought it through a gift certificate because I read a lot in the 7th grade.
And if you REALLY REALLY have a lot of money to spend, Painter Classic. That one is the best.
