Where in Japan are you headed to? Tokyo or one of the other cities? Last time I was there was a few years ago.
Random Recs:
Learn important basic kanji. In, Out, Restroom… that sort. Most toilets in public restrooms are the squat kind, but usually there are two western-style toilets at the end. Learn to count properly, no 'shi.' Driving is british-style.
Clothing sizes are different; here I'm a small, over there I would buy a large. Get used to to wacked out engrish, it's everywhere. There is smoking allowed in public places. Red meat is very expensive. Learn standard greetings and phrases. If your accent is truly horrid, they might start speaking english.
Nearly everything you buy that could possibly be considered a gift will be wrapped. Get used to sleeping on a futon. Taking out the garbage is an event in itself.
^_^
It's all over the place, but if you've got any specific questions just say.

oO ^^' Gads, so much to remember!! LOL
I'm really not surprised about the clothing sizes, honestly, though I hadn't thought about it yet. . . lol My grandmother barely comes up to my shoulder and I am only 5'4"! ^^' lol
We're headed to the Yokosuka Base (?) that I'm told is an hour from Tokyo.
Are there any good programs for learning Japanese? ^^ btw. . .

You're going to Yokosuka? I've been there and it's really nice. ^_^ The shopping isn't too bad on Dobuita Street, and if it's still there, the arcade is a good place to play around in.
As for learning Japanese, my best bet would be to find a really good phrase/dictionary book and pray. Either that or become good friends over there with someone who is fluent in both English and Japanese, and learn from them. ^^;; I grew up with a Japanese grandmother, and that's how I picked up on it.
