Someone sent me this question through email, and other than The Last Unicorn, which she's convinced it's not, I can't figure out what movie it might be. Maybe someone here knows? She saw it in the 90's, but that doesn't mean it isn't an 80's movie. It's also supposed to be animated, so it rules out Legend which doesn't match at all anyway.
"All I remember is a unicorn leading a boy through the forest into a patch of light and then transforming into a girl. Then at the end the boy was fighting a shadow/king/tyrant."

It sounds familar. It's definitely not "The Last Unicorn" Hummm. Now it will bother me till i figure this out.

It really sounds like The Last Unicorn meets Legend. I think Sera said there was an animated unicorn Show called Unico. Maybe that's it - I have never watched it, so no clue what happens in it.

I've been debating if it could be one of the Unico movies for a bit now; it'd be a fair bit of a stretch given her description, but I've noticed that a lot of people who only watched it as children actually have had problems remembering much of it correctly, including me... *grins* So, it could be possible.
In one of them, Unico turns a cat into a girl, and in the end fight a baron who turns into a huge demon...and in the other one Unico and a girl are turned into toys at the same time, with the girl becoming a young woman doll, and they fight a round puppet lord that floats and changes shape a lot. Neither really involves a boy though; there is a young man in the latter one, but I don't think he and Unico spend much time together. You could ask her though and see if she thinks it could be either of those...and let us know if you ever find out what it is, I'm rather curious now. ^^

She didn't seem to think it was Unico, but I'll drag up some pictures or Youtube snippets and see if the animation style jogs her memory.
I also had the impression of Last Unicorn meets Legend. Course it also sounds like a mixed up remembered Unico. I've never actually seen those movies, should look them up. They sound cute.

Actually, I was beginning to wonder if it might be an episode of something, which is why she was having so much trouble finding it. I could try asking her it's that one. So far, she hasn't written back about any of the other suggestions...

Saving Our Fragile Earth
Unico had one more anime appearance afterward, in a short film called Saving Our Fragile Earth made for showing at the Tezuka Osamu Animation Theatre at Tezuka Osamu World in Kyoto. This short, like the original pilot, had an ecological theme: Unico and Tsubasa, a talking tree boy, are distressed by the fact that the planet Earth has become polluted and drained of resources to the point of being uninhabitable. With help from the Sphinx and the "Time Fairy" (Astro Boy), the two travel back into the past to try to prevent humans from taking the wrong path and spare the Earth from ecological devastation.
