You know what would be really helpful? If Geocities allowed free members to download their websites using FTP, even though you technically have to be a Yahoo! member for that. I'm trying to back up all my old files (some from 1998!) that I left when I moved, since I don't seem to have a copy of them... and it's taking FOREVER...

Arg! That's horrible. But I don't really have a site on geocities, and I use other hosts, however it could come in handy to other people, and I tried it once and it was pretty dandy.

Ah, at least now I know the closing date. Though I think I got all of my site off there months ago. I'd better go do a recheck though.
Its a pain in the butt, though I feel I have found a better host because of it.

It's a huge pain and, like drago mentioned, the least they could have done was offer a d/l tool. <<; Ah, well. Who are you with now?

Yeah. *Shakes fist at geo*
I'm with 110MB.com. Basic account is free, but you can add payed upgrades to your account (like FTP and other stuff) as you need it, if you need it. No adds either.
I had a look around at other fee hosts, but this one seemed the best to me. xD

I use Powwebs.com and am quite happy with it, but you do have to pay. They do have awesome customer service the few times I've needed it, which is a huge plus. *goes to finish clearing off her geocities site...kept forgetting about it* Thanks for the deadline head's up. That will motivate me to get that done! ...you know, they never notified me by email or anything, you'd think that would be the least they could do. But it's like AOL that just wiped out my account without warning. Good thing I do all my HTML'ing on my computer first and then upload, I probably didn't lose anything, but would have been nice to check

They e-mailed me at my yahoo account, which i just happened to re-activate for something else entirely. =P They're really not making it easy for us with free sites. And it saddens me terribly since Geocities used to be really great. i still blame Yahoo for buying them out and turning them retarded. =P
And i still haven't located at least one of my sites on harddrive; i so hope i don't have to save it page/page + img/img. @___@;;;;

Yay, all done. I never did have all that much on those sites, and I moved everything to my paid domain a while ago. Just needed to double check I didn't miss anything. Now to wait till Tripod goes I still have stuff on that one, though I don't remember for the life of me what it might be. BTW, if anyone has links to my geocities sites either for critters I adopted from you or you adopted from me, just message me and I'll give you the new url ^_^ And if anyone knows of any Sams or Songs on geocities, let Skysong know! She created a database for all her old Sams (which is awesome) and she doesn't have all the images, so would be great to send them the her ^.^ (samanayrs.net/forum)

I also use powweb and haven't had any complaints. I love the fact that it's all one for all. Everyone pays the same amount, which isn't all that much, and everyone gets a whole bunch of cool features that come with an automatic installation area.

I would not have known about the closure at all if it was not posted here. So I have you guys to thank for saving my critters, I'm sure they all are thanking you. xD
I moved all my critters over to the new site several months ago (to prevent the rush at the last minute, since there was just so much to move!). Now I need to transfer it all over to my new computer (so that it is safe and easy to find in the future).
It will be a shame to see all the old geo sites go though.
I've just looked into powweb now. It looks really great, I will definitely keep it in mind during my seemingly unending web host search.

*hugs* I lost it all, too. And I don't even have the excuse that I got it too late. I just forgot when the deadline was.
