Kalina hid her face in Gisele's shoulder.
"What was he doing there anyway?" came her muffled, plaintive reply.

Mishuen stared from one to the next, absolutely aghast. They were talking over him as though -he- were the problem. He flicked his tail in annoyance. Well!
The Eastern nuzzled the hybrid concilatorally. "I don't know, but I'm positive everything will be fine."
-I- was doing nothing more than lounging in the sun! the put out Miberu said sharply. A more apt question is wot are you doing here?

"But I told you - !" Kalina began, but thought better of it and shut her mouth.
She was a noctyier, he was a big grown-up Miberu, and she wasn't about to talk back to him. She looked hopefully at Zefiryn. She was usually good for explanations and speaking up for herself.

"We?" Zefiryn retorted sharply. "-We- are just out looking for someone. . who is NOT you!" She snorted slightly at him.
That suits me, the Miberu replied just as acidly. I have no use for such as you!
"Well, I'm so glad that you're suited," the Air retorted again. "It certainly makes -my--"
"Zefiryn." The name was a reprimand, and the Explorer turned sharply to her friend. Gisele continued easily, "Our purpose is not to alienate other races, no matter how we view them."
Mishuen gave a low growl deep in his throat, but the Eastern didn't give him a chance to start again either. "As such, we apologize for any offense we've given you, Mishuen--"
"Wot?!" Zefiryn gasped.
"And we hope you won't hold it against us or our kind. We were simply surprised and concerned for the safety of our young friend."
"No one would fall for that load of--"
I am pleased to accept your apology, Mishuen cut off the grey haughtily. I hope further relations will be. . . less volatile.

Kalina risked another glance at Mishuen.
"Does that mean he's going to move out of the way and let us by?" she whispered to Gisele.

Gisele blinked and nearly laughed, but carefully kept it hidden. "I'm not sure," she replied softly, tilting her head so her lowered voice would still reach the hybrid's ears easily. "Perhaps you should ask him."
Mishuen heard this little quip but said nothing, instead pretending he couldn't hear them.

Kalina gulped. Was she kidding? He was totally scary!
She took half a step forward. "Um, so, if you're not going to, you know," she whispered the next - "eat us..."
She shot a desperate look at Zefiryn. "Can we... uh, ...keep going?"
It suddenly occurred to the little red that she could very well ask the Miberu if he'd seen Zefiryn's brother, but that would have to wait for the next burst of adrenaline-fueled courage.

Miberu's ears flattened again and he stared at the hybrid with brilliant green eyes narrowed with annoyance. And just how would I be able to eat you anyway? There's only one of me and three of you! Exasperation sharpened his tone before he could control it, and he kept a wary eye on Kalina for fear she burst into tears yet again.

The little mix opened her mouthed, only to close it again without making a sound. She blinked rapidly, tallying figures in her head.
2 gryverns.
1 noctyier.
1 miberu
Hey, he was outnumbered. Kalina pricked her ears up as this realization sunk in. She was safe!

Mishuen caught the movement and narrowed his bright eyes. That certainly didn't bode well for him. He sighed under his breath.
"Well, we do have things to do," Zefiryn suddenly said pointedly. Mishuen seemed cowed, or close enough, for the moment and she wanted to see her brother!
"Indeed," Gisele agreed. "It was well meeting you, Mishuen." The Miberu retorted with a small snort, but the Air continued anyway. "And now we must be on our way." With that she stepped daintily forward, leaving the others to follow as they would.

Kalina was feeling braver, but didn't keep her from gluing herself to Gisele's flank as they passed. She squelched the childish impulse to poke her tongue out at Mishuen as he stared at them.

Mishuen stared as they went by, but he curled his lip and gave an angry sounding growl. Females! He abruptly melted into his own shadow and disappeared, leaving the Orchard and the temperamental creatures that lived or visited here behind.
Zefiryn glanced back once he was gone. "Phew!" she sighed out. "That was a little intense! Wot a weirdo!"

"Totally," Kalina agreed with conviction.
She wondered about the Miberu. Perhaps he had been monitoring their progress all along. Perhaps he knew where Zefiryrn's brother was!
Kalina gasped.
Maybe the gruff creature had kidnapped the other gryvern! And was running back to him now to do something horrid to him, perhaps to drink his blood!
The all too familiar vacant look that had wandered into her eyes disappeared as the red trembled in excitement and fear. "Quick!" she yapped. "Before your brother turns into a vampire-Miberu! Let's follow him!"

The two gryvern's heads snapped to stare at the noctyier in surprise and bemusement. Vampire-Miberu? Just where had that come from?
"I'm sorry, sweetie," Gisele finally said as she took in the hybrid's over-excitement at the thought. "You're going to have to explain that one."

"I just... I... ahm..." Kalina paled. She'd gone off and done it again and gotten herself overexcited.
She sat back on her haunches and nervously scratched at her right ear with a back leg. She suggested in a whisper, "Nevermind?"
